Alexander Ovechkin scored his seventh and eighth goals of the season as the Caps pounded the enigmatic Leafs before an angry crowd of 19,316.

"We played very well tonight, all four lines played well, everybody scored and our goalie played well," said Ovechkin, who now has nine goals in nine career games against the Leafs. "I think we deserved tonight's win."

With a large pack of Toronto reporters scrunched around him, Alex Ovechkin rubbed the stubble on the bottom of his chin, then flashed his trademark gap-toothed smile.

The young Washington Capitals superstar had just been asked how opposing teams could stop him from dominating games, a question that he obviously found humorous.

"Nobody can stop me ... just me," Ovechkin said confidently with a chuckle.

On this night, Alexander the Great was right on the mark.

Indeed, the hometown Maple Leafs, coming off back-to-back road victories, could not, in fact, stop Ovechkin.

At 22, Ovechkin now a mentor

Alex Ovechkin has become many things in Washington: a celebrity, a millionaire and a hero.

Now he's a mentor and role model.



The 22-year-old has opened up his home to newcomer Nicklas Backstrom, and is helping the Swedish rookie adapt to hockey and life in the U.S. capital.

"I remember being a rookie and Dainius Zubrus, he helped me, so I wanted to give back the way Dainius did for me," said Ovechkin, whose two goals lifted the Capitals to a 7-1 win over the Leafs at the Air Canada Centre.

"OV (Ovechkin) has been very good for Nicklas, he takes him all over and kind of shows him around," Capitals coach Glen Hanlon said. "Dainius was great with him, and now it hasn't taken him long to reciprocate."

The Capitals hope Ovechkin continues setting down roots in Washington.

The all-star forward is in the final year of a three-year entry-level contract that will see him earn $3.5 million (U.S.) if all incentives are reached.

Talks on a new deal are off to a slow start – no offer has been made, Ovechkin says – but the player doesn't see that as an insurmountable problem.

"We have lots of time," he said. "It will happen. I want to be here (with Capitals). I don't like a change of place. I like the team and the organization and the fans."

The question was raised yesterday in the Washington dressing room about whether Ovechkin would like to play in a Toronto, a city passionate about hockey.

Ovechkin hesitated when asked about Toronto. "Uh, well, I think ... I'm not sure, but ... no."
