Team Russia boycotted Russian media

As reported by SovSport reporter Ponomarenko the whole team passed the journalists and left to the locker room. A bit later they realized that they could be penalized by IIHF and sent two rookies to talk to media: Anisimov and Kulikov.

Now you can see why Ovi didn't talk to media in Vancouver, there was a decision made by the team and he just followed it. Too many Russians is not good for Ovi. :-)

The reason for boycott is the story about some players getting caught smoking by paparazzi on video. Apparently Russian TV channel (Russia-2) showed it again:

The players took offense to a talk show on channel "Russia-2", where the subject of several cigarettes smoked in the restaurant was relished once again.

Update:
Turned out team Germany does the same, they are boycotting media as well.

I tell you what I am getting tired of most of media period. Canadian, Russian, American....it's all turning into ridiculous opinions. Just play some hockey and we'll call it even. Honest to God I feel bad for Ovi, he's had a really emotional year, just let him be Ovi period. Thanks for posting this though, maybe some canadian media outlet will pick it up, but more than likely not.

hey,

thx for the info on the russian team. i think it's a good decision.

but: afaik, our german team's not boycotting the media. you get a lot of interviews during the game and afterwards, and the team does hold press conferences. plus, marcel goc writes a column on hockeyweb.de

just fyi :)

cheers,
a german fan still bedazzled by the russia-germany game on saturday. I GOT TO SEE OVIE! :D

@Rouven,
Yes, Ovie is an experience. I'm glad you got to see him play.

TJ,
Too many Russians also seems bad for Semin. Look at all the penalties he's piling up.

Good, if they don't want to talk to the media they shouldn't have to. Its a joke they would get fined, but I like they sent two rookies out, hilarious. And good job for Datsyuk, Ovechkin, Gonchar, and Malkin playing for their countries. Apparently playing for your country twice in one year is too much for overrated, cheap-shot crybabies.

Rouven,
I've read it in Sport-Express, that Uwe Krupp is boycotting media, the interviews are very short, etc. I'll dig in more and post it.

tj,

hmm - sounds like what the media thinks about someone rightfully being pi**ed with them ... almost everyone threw sh*t at krupp after our team really sucked at the olympics.

at least the players seem to like to talk to the media ... although the usual, football-like questions the reporters ask seem to dumbfound the players a bit *g*

Thanks for setting the record straight. The smoking/drinking thing is being blown way out of proportion to its importance. Has any of this affected the performance of Team Russia so far? Didn't think so.

I empathize with Ovie and all he's been through this year. But so far at the WC, he seem to be taking everything in stride. He did rightfully call out the media vultures for making hay out of all this, and also the fair weather fans who support him and his team in good times and then turn on him if the team loses or he doesn't always perform to their satisfaction. I want Ovie to be Ovie too, so I wish the critics will all shut up and crawl back under the rocks they came from. Enough is enough.

Yes, Ovie is an experience. I was lucky enough to see him in person when the Caps played the Avalanche in Denver this past season. Even from a distance in the nosebleed seats, you can see, you can FEEL, his greatness. I hope I get the chance to do this again.
