Ovechkin: I slept a couple of hours on the plane

Japer's Rink, June 26, 2010:
Prior to the beginning of the 2009-2010 season, Alex Ovechkin spent a few days in Canada doing some promotional appearances.

One of those was a private event for Energizer Canada. Part of his commitment for this promotion was to return to Canada to host a clinic for a local kids' team.

The lucky team was chosen by lottery, and after many delays, Ovie was finally able to make good on his promise with a long journey from Las Vegas to Ajax, Ontario following the NHL Awards. He made a whole bunch of kids very happy.

Some young players got a once-in-a-lifetime treat Thursday - a chance to skate with hockey superstar Alexander Ovechkin.

AO was rocking his Team Russia helmet at the practice in Ontario. The man has stones.

And just how big a gear bag does he have to travel with anyway?

Ovie doesn't just have stones, he has boulders. And he wears them well LOL.

He has to travel with a pretty big gear bag because he stops by my place whenever he catches a red eye flight somewhere LOL.

How fun it was to see how excited those boys were to skate with Ovie, the one boy saying he didn't sleep all night. What a nice thing for Ovie to do.

we probably will never scratch the surface of knowing how many events and meetings Ovie does every year. it's a good thing he has so much energy.

I get the impression Ovie goes out of his way to do events for kids, especially young fans and hockey players who look up to him. Maybe he relates to their innocence and enthusiasm for the sport, and wants to encourage their desire to play and play the game well.

Is Ovie still doing his Crazy 8's program, buying season tickets to Caps games so kids in the DC area can go to Caps games? I haven't heard much about this lately so I'm wondering if he still does it.

Firstly, I regret not moving to Ajax last year when I had the chance lol

Secondly, I think this is very cool, especially since he not only did it for kids, he did it for Canadian kids!

Also, Ovie is awesome. Period.

Yes, he still does Crazy 8s and Greenie still has Greens Gang.

I don't see a thread for this and don't know where else to post it.

This comes from the official Caps website. Ovie has been nominated for an ESPY for Best NHL player to be determined by fan voting. Fans can vote for Ovie now at espn.com/espys or facebook.com/espn.

On another subject, now that Ovie has returned to Moscow, I hope we get some news and pics of the doggie he brought back from the WC.
