Cocktail party for Ovechkin and other NHL stars by Vanity Fair
NEW YORK -- A who's who from the hockey world mingled with big wigs from the arts, entertainment and fashion worlds in midtown Manhattan on Tuesday night. If appearances mean anything, their worlds collided with grace.read more...

Vanity Fair editor and native Ottawan Graydon Carter hosted a cocktail party for the NHL and 20 of its biggest stars at his restaurant, Monkey Bar, on 54th Street between Madison and Park Avenues. Alex Ovechkin, Evgeni Malkin, Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews, among others, shared stories and snapped photos over cocktails and appetizers with notables like designer Vera Wang, actor Tom Cavanagh, director Jason Reitman and gold-medal winning figure skater Evan Lysacek.
This wasn't the first time Vanity Fair and the NHL hooked up in a cross-promotion -- it wasn't even the first time Tuesday (Alex Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby were in a photo shoot together earlier in the day for Vanity Fair with photographer Bruce Weber). However, it was yet another sign that the NHL is a player in the pop culture society, even during Fashion Week.
"We've done a lot of hockey things over the years and the thing is with hockey guys, they look normal," Carter told NHL.com. "They're not huge-sized guys, 350 pounds, so they fit in with normal life a little better. It works for us. The NFL and professional baseball are covered to death in this country, and hockey is just cooler."

...and Ovie wore a tshirt. Is that the Virgin Mary on it? LOL!
@0 not only did he wear a t-shirt, it's looking pretty tight. I wonder if he borrowed that t-shirt from his BFF Semin?
He's wearing jeans but you can't tell if they are ripped from the pictures. Pretty funny to see Ovie dressed casually while everyone else is dressed up. Maybe he and Semin had a bet that they would each show up at a formal event in t-shirt and jeans, and they get to select the other's t-shirt from their own collection.
If Ovie had been around back then, the Virgin wouldn't have been a virgin for long. ;P
Ovie to Bettman: "Are you wearing lifts?"
Oh Ovi, the only one in a t-shirt. At least he makes the t-shirt look good :)
And what's with the photo caption of the photo with Ovi that says "Graydon Carter Hosts a Cocktail Party for the Rising Stars of the NHL"
Last time I checked, he wasn't a rising star, he IS a STAR!
Only Ovie can get away with having a Virgin Mary and streaking females tee shirts in his wardrobe LOL. I'm sure Semin will borrow the VM at some point if he doesn't already own one of his own.
And, oh yes, as O says, if Ovie had been around in Biblical times, he would have "known" the VM...in a Biblical sense LOL. The New Testament Scriptures would be a lot more R-rated than they are now. I can picture it, Ovie as father to Mary's baby. It gives an entirely different meaning to the Christmas story. ROFL!
Soooo, for giggles I clicked on the Getty Link to see where the pics were gotten from and I saw the search list was "ovechkin vanity fair" returning the 3 pics, 2 seen here.
I then swapped ovechkin for crosby ( I dont know what made me do it!!) which returned 4 pictures. My takeaway from Sid's pictures was that Zach Parise is a cutie pie! and so is Hank Lundqvist (me-yow!) But I also noted that these pictures were with Sid and other players, except for the notable Tom Jolly of the NYT. But in Ovi's pictures, he is talking with the Commish, the COO, and Graydon Carter himself! All the Power people. I am 100% sure that Sid had his time and pics with them too, but it still strikes me... Ovi is a man of Power.
None of them seem upset that he is wearing a T-shirt. Although, how did he miss that memo? Im glad though...
Ovi being Ovi *always* rocks.
Then again, I think he just wanted to show off his arms.
THUD.
Do we know for a fact that everyone else was wearing jacket?
But of course he'd wear a t-shirt! But not just ANY t-shirt, a D&G t-shirt. And really, what else would we expect? I once read that he likes D&G as it fits his body well - no argument here! He's definitely got his own way of doing things and the confidence to carry it off.
@Steph, interesting observation about him being a man of power. It's so true, he exudes those qualities, doesn't he? I think it's a significant part of his appeal.
@Steph,
Lunny is gorgeous (and the only good thing about the Rangers). It's always too bad that his beauty gets hidden away behind a goalie mask.
Alyonka has several interviews with him from NHL media day:

In the behind the scenes video there is a cameo by Ovie. He does that smoldering, intense look effortlessly.
According to this article, sounds like Ovi was in a suit just prior to this event. He must have changed into his good T for the party.

@mkat83 Ovie was wearing a suit in the media day events I saw on video and in pics. So that means he changed out of the suit just for the party.
So glad that Ovie is back in DC, along with Semin! Have people watched the adorable video of Varly and Bradley visiting the school on caps365? Varly mostly stands there and smiles and lets Bradley do the talking, but he is cute.
I recall reading about the cocktail party and some of the people who posted were really offended by Ovi wearing a tee shirt. I just laughed about it.
Agree that Ovi does exude power. He reminds me of an old friend of mine I had worked with for many years (who was also named Alexander and who also has a September birthday).
Ovie exudes power and confidence. IMO the people complaining about his tee shirt wither in the light and heat of his awesome persona.
Smoldering and intense aren't enough descriptors to capture Ovie's look in the NHL video.
