Yet, to me, Ovie looks a bit slimer than last year.
"Slimmer."
What is up with all my typos lately. Argh!
@O: You got to it before I did! I was thinking the same thing, which means that he has probably reduced his body fat.
Also, the weight listed is the weight he is on day 1... I think he gained weight during last season. But they are required to weigh in everyday, so I don't think it ever got too bad. I just think that the only place for him to gain weight is in his waist, thanks to Papa Ovie... :-)
I don't think Ovi has a fitness problem, its his diet. When you're young you can eat whatever you want and burn it off if you stay active.
When you hit your mid-20's to early 30's your metabolism slows down a lot. All those empty calories in cokes, alcohol and hot dogs start to stick and you have to work out twice as hard to get rid of it. Especially in your core (stomach) which controls your movement and supports your lower back. I'm not saying deprive himself but adjust.
@Steph: I agree, it's probably reduced body fat, but more muscle- which also might be why he was having a hard time keeping up. It seems that Kovalchuk's trainer was working on building muscle or working that part of the body more than skating or endurance tbh
BTW, how's he doing now? Still tired, or does he seem better?
But yes, he should start eating better- he should move in with Brooks for a few weeks. Seemed to helped Greener who looks way better this year! lol
He's looking better on the ice during drills, needs a bit more time to get the feel of the puck back. The true test of stamina is the NHL seasonal slog.
I think you guys spend way too much time fretting about his weight. Mike Komisarek is 6'3" and plays at 243...luke schenn a 20 year old is 6'2 and plays at 230 and i'm sure will add more pounds to his frame as his body matures and that's what I think we're talking about here. Ovi's body has matured drastically since he came into the NHL. He went from a boy to a man in a matter of a few years. I can see Ovi playing at an average weight of 235 which is good for him especially since he hits like a D-man.
@bg,
We aren't fretting at all, just discussing it. It was the weight he put on last year during the season that seemed to reduce his explosiveness that was a concern. Now, he seems to have converted more to muscle.
His diet can leave much to be desired, however. Kids these days.
I remember last year and the discussion of his weight and that's why I bring up "fretting". I'm not sure I agree with lost some of his explosiveness. He scored 50 goals (again) and could have had more if not for the suspension. He also had more assists and led the league in forwards with +/-...you can't do that with a spare tire IMO.
We never said he was bad, just that it slowed him down a bit. He was still productive, played a great game and everything, but it's possible that had an effect on him.
