Ovechkin scores on shootout

Ovi scores a shootout winning goal, Semin's goal was more like insurance. Going into the third period Ovi didn't register a single shot on goal. Did he play bad? No, I would not say so.

He set up Backstrom who couldn't score on an empty net, he gave a perfect pass to Green from behind the net, but Green couldn't handle it. There were a couple more moments like that, but his partners couldn't finish.

Ovi was doing what Nicklas Backstrom was supposed to do, setting up his partners. I actually don't remember when last time Backie set up Ovi, maybe it was last season. :-) It was not Backie's night, he was also horrible on faceoffs winning only 24% of faceoffs.

At the end Ovi took the game in his own hands, cruised all over the place and almost scored. The game was stopped because Ovi got slashed and Caps went on PP. Two goal posts later Caps couldn't finish Leafs in regulation, then comes overtime, shootout, Backie misses, Leafs' Kessel and Kulemin couldn't solve Neuvy, but Ovi and Semin scored.

I was extremely upset how Caps played defensively for the most part of the game, especially because of all that recent talk about improvements in that area. If it looks like a Swiss cheese, you know, then it is a Swiss cheese.

Here's what Brooks Laich said to Corey Masisak recently:

“Overall I think our team defense has improved, but it is not where we want it yet. We still have strides to go there,” Laich said. “I’m not satisfied with it yet and I don’t think our team is either. I think we’re still giving up some chances. Especially early in games, we’re giving up too many quality scoring chances and we’d like to eliminate that. Five-on-five we don’t want to give any goals up. I think 5-on-5 should be the strength of this hockey team. I think we still have for improvement in our defensive-zone play.

“The little things matter so much. Just chipping a puck out in the first opportunity and not giving them a second opportunity, good passes out of the zone from defensemen to forwards and forwards making a good pass to your center – sharp things like that keep the puck out of your net.”

"The little things"? It should be a system, you won't go that far in playoffs with "little things". When a system, a variation of a neutral zone trap, is installed, it dictates you not to give up scoring chances to an opponent.

Here's an excerpt from today's article about Tampa Bay Lightning coach Guy Boucher and his defensive system by Damian Christodero:
So perhaps the Lightning, with its 1-3-1 system tries to stifle teams in the neutral zone. It does have elements of the trap, after all. And the Lightning does send two defensemen into the corners of the defensive zone to harass puck carries, and that does force the forwards to come back to the defensive zone to take defensive positions abandoned by the defensemen. But the goal is to get the puck. And as Boucher said, "I'm all about the transition. ... I'm a forward game type of guy."

That's what the system does, it's not about "little things", it forces "the forwards to come back to the defensive zone to take defensive positions abandoned by the defensemen." This is what left wing lock, installed by Red Wings did: it forced the left wing to play defense.

It is the same when we talk about the goalies, one is acrobatic, takes unbelievable saves and then goes down with groin injury. Another one is solid in positioning, is drilled to take the right position with the right angle at the right time.

Chances are, you can still win without a system doing little things here and there, no question, or you can also win a lottery and retire to your own island. :-)

Ovechkin (nice NFL undershirt), Chimera, Green and Gordon talk to he media

Ovechkin's stats:

2 assists, -1, total ice 23:11, 26 shifts, average 00:53, PP 05:52, even 7:14, 3 shots on goal, 5 attempts blocked, 1 missed, 3 hits, 1 takeaway, 1 blocked shot

i was so upset when backie missed the open net, not only from the awesome Ovie feed but in the shootout as well. Caps missed so many golden opportunities tonight, but come season end no one is going to remember this game. its not a season changer, almost an epic fail? yes... but we won, neuvy wasn't his best but was great when we needed him to be.

ovie was buzzing the whole game and def deserved a goal for all his effort. overall glad we got the W

Did anyone see Valeria almost get hi by a puck during the 2nd period ?? I have to admit, it was somewhat humorous.

The game was painful to watch at some points....they do so well and then play sloppy and make stupid mistakes. Once again it seems the Caps need to work on playing a full 60 minutes of hockey.

you have to give the leafs some credit, they are one of the fastest teams in the league. the ranger's coach tortorella said he was stunned the first time they played the leafs and said he had no idea they were that fast.

when the leafs are using their speed they can make the other team look slow and sloppy. leafs have no where near the talent the caps do, but they're a scrappy team with some serious speed and are the youngest team in the league.

good game last night, very entertaining.

I really liked the game last night. Both teams played really well, but both also had some little mistakes here and there.

I am, as previously stated, a Leafs fan first, Caps second. Though I was wishing for the Leafs to win, I'm not horribly upset they lost. The Caps played well, both teams deserved to win imo.

The Leafs are struggling a bit to find their footing, but they are able to play a strong game. I wouldn't have put Kessel on first for shootout b/c he wasn't on his game. And I'd have kept Hanson up instead of playing Mitchell who I have no clue why he has a spot on the roster- Hanson would have been all over Ovie lol would've made of an even better game on both ends!

The Caps played very well too, improved games from a lot of players there as well. It was very entertaining to watch, games like last night is what the game is about. Strong from both sides.

We were a bit tired from the night before loss(to Ottawa, what the hell?)and missing a few key players (Phaneuf and Armstrong could've been utilized well last night, Armstrong especially lol)

I also think they let the King/Orr fight linger a bit too long. It looked like they were trying to hold themselves up by the end. It loses the point of the fight in the first place, to set a pace for the game. But whatever lol

There were some bad moves on both side, some unfortunate giveaways, penalties and such.

I actually LOL'd at the first Semin penalty. This was me after the call: "Dude, what? [replay]...oh, it was Mitchell... do it again! ...Harder too!" lol I really dislike Mitchell. He gave the puck away to both Semin and Backstrom! COME ON DUDE, JUST PUT IT IN YOUR OWN NET, WHY DON'T YOU!!! At least it'd give us a firm reason to drop him. lol sorry.

Anyway, now I can go back to being a Caps fan until December 6th lol

Also, Brads looked pretty good out there as well! Nice jorb!

Also, Green was lookin' damn fine!! lol And I'm not horribly into him. :0)

I agree, Leafs played very well and exposed all Caps weaknesses in D. Their goalie Gustaffson was pretty good too.

I'm pretty sure I'll have an ulcer by the end of this season. The start out bad, then ramp it up and then they get sloppy, only to finish in style (sort of). I need alcohol. But glad that Ovi scored in the end cause we don't want him to be grumpy :-)

The Leafs would have a few more wins if they didn't just play Gustavsson against hard teams. He's played 4 games, played well- but they were against good teams-great goalies- and we couldn't produce enough. He won against Pittsburgh, lost against Boston, Rangers, and now Washington. I like Giguere, but Gustavsson is better! Come on! lol

@bwitch: I was literally having an anxiety attack last night. Both teams need to work on bringing a full, 60 minute game. Hopefully Poti will be back soon, as well as Johansson and Varly. Poor Neuvy's probably tired!

Neuvy's been looking good though. I notice a lot of younger goalies have a different style compared to slightly older ones. They seem a lot more creative with their blocks and rebounds. Not sure about the Caps prospect goalies, but watching the Leafs' bb goalies makes me excited. They're so talented these days! Still need to learn, but there's hope in NHL goaltending! lol

Also, I smiled immediately after Ovie scored, then remembered he's playing the Leafs. I couldn't help it. I also pointed out to my sister his salute to his brother. She smiled. <3

Speaking of Boston, good luck! Time to knock Thomas off his lose-less streak! lol

@Mango: Yes, and time for Ovi to knock Chara on his ass :-)

Sadly I won't be watching the game live but will be following on Twitter.

I'll hopefully be watching. No other games tomorrow so hopefully the stream will be good. Hopefully they'll win it. Maybe they'll play Rask lol

I had that friggin' guy, but dropped him and got Neuvy instead! It's worked out for me... including last night lol

Ovi seems to be on a roll, despite what his score sheet says from last night, he worked his ass off for the team and scored when it mattered. Hopefully he'll send a couple in tomorrow and continue his spree.

This game was a lot more difficult than it should have been for the Caps. Give the Leafs credit, they gave the Caps all they could handle. But just when you think the Caps have things sorted out, they resort to old bad habits, especially on defense, playing sloppy, taking stupid penalties. Let's get this cleared up soon guys, and start playing more consistent for a change.

Maybe the two assists on very nice passes will quiet any talk about Ovie being a selfish player. He's a team player through and through, although in some circles he's often criticized when criticism is not warranted. Ovie can be criticized for some things for sure, but IMO not as a team player.

As for the Bruins game tomorrow night, it's payback time--time to light the lamp early and often on Thomas, and time to put Chara on his butt or over the boards on to the bench. Get it done Caps!

@Mango did you say "nice jorb" OMG!!! awesome now i must go watch some homestarrunner is that site even still up havent been to it in forevever. JORB!!!!

Yep, Saw that they showed Valeria when the puck went up into the stands. Funny--she was in the same section as Ovi's dad and Semin's mom, but she was two rows above them and off to the side. Maybe Ovi's dad doesn't like her? And she was with some girl who looked a little heavy, so either they do have heavy young women in Russia or that woman was American ;)

THEY DO HAVE HEAVIER WOMEN IN RUSSIA! It's just like any other place, they have all shapes and sizes just like us. They also have not completely most-beautiful women in the world there too!

I missed the puck thing though, I wasn't really watching the game. Maybe she got him to sign it after? lol

Where does Ovie's parents sit? I thought Ovie's mom went to the games and the dad went to practices. Maybe it depended on ticket availability, but I would think Ovie would have a small block of seats since he has lots of visitors during the year. Where is his mom? I haven't seen her at all this year.

I don't think the puck likes the gf. She should take it as a sign and leave.

@lastAnon,

Uncle Misha and Mom Tatiana always sit separate. That might explain it.
