Ovechkin enjoys vacation in Jurmala

The athlete nicknamed Alexander the Great arrived in Latvia with several friends. Originally, the company made a foray into Riga's exclusive boutiques. Alexander, whose height is 1,88 m and weight 99 kg, especially liked the brand jeans in a boutique Plaza. After the shopping the company went to the resort city Jurmala, where they stay up to this day . Alexander and his friends fell in love with Jurmala's popular restaurant 36.līnija in Bulduri . There they have been seen repeatedly.

In one of his visits Ovie, a known admirer of spectacular blondes, met with local celebrities, singers Aishey (24), who was representing Latvia in the "New Wave - 2009" and "Eurovision -2010" , and (экс-фабриканткой) Ella (24), who stopped to drink soft drinks on the way from the beach.

The girls willingly joined the company of the hockey player and had a lively conversation for about an hour. Then Aisha and Ella have paid the bill and went further, and Alexander and the company remained in the restaurant.

Later in the evening rapper Timati (26), which in those days is also the guest of Jurmala, posted in his microblog at twitter.com his photo with Ovechkin with the caption: "I've run into Ovechkin at 'del Mar' at night, the fun continued... a toast for bachelor status" and added that the glass had water. Both were the guests of private party at the restaurant La Riva, the merriment was in full swing when the police arrived; the inhabitants of neighboring buildings complained of too loud music."

Reporting live from Jurmala, I am Emily.

A baptism in the morning - chilling with Timati in the evening

Timati: "I've run into Ovechkin at 'del Mar' at night, the fun continued... a toast for bachelor status (water in a glass)))"

A baptism in the morning - chilling with Timati in the evening...

And in the same shirt!

Moscow never sleeps.

I wonder how Timati ended up in Jurmala...

After some googling I found that Jurmala will host an International Competition for Young Pop Singers "New Wave 2010", but in July. Whatever... :-)

Still no Semin in vicinity...

Sasha Ovechkin in Jurmala became a father. A Godfather.

Dubultsky Orthodox Church of the Holy Prince Vladimir

By Sabira Mutallimova, Chas Daily, Latvia, June 30, 2010:

The Kazan "Ak Bars" defenseman and the Russian national team player Ilya Nikulin and his wife Ekaterina christened their six-month-son at the Dubultsky Orthodox Church of the Holy Prince Vladimir yesterday. The team Russia and Washington Capitals forward Alexander Ovechkin was chosen as a child's Godfather.

"I am becoming a godfather for the third time. This honor was given to me before by my relatives, my cousin's and uncle's families. I know Ilya for a long time, almost 10 years. We have close and friendly relations," says to Chas Sasha Ovechkin about Ilya Nikulin.

"And I am particularly pleased that I was entrusted to be a godfather of his first child. The sacrament was held in sincere excitement. I had goose bumps, was sweating," confessed the famous hockey player, who, as soon as he went outside of the church fence, unbuttoned his shirt to really chill up. "I am very happy and I am very pleased!" he added.

The happy parents of Ignat, who was baptized just six months after his birth, we pleased as well.

"What can I say? We are very fond of our son and he will be encouraged, accompanied by us in his life. We'll be together in sorrow and joy," said the boy's mother Ekaterina.

"And most important for Ignat to grew up healthy! We all wish him that!" adds a godmother of Ignat Maria Krylova.

A kid himself was feeling very well, he was not crying and was not capricious, smiling and posing for cameras. And he was vociferously singing a little something, and so the priest gave a blessing to the boy to sing in the choir. Ignat clutched his little hands on one of his first documents in life, the certificate of baptism, when it was given out to parents, thus the baby seemed to show that he understands what a serious event has taken place in his life. And he received the name of Ignatius during his baptism .

The little Dubultsky church for baptism was chosen on advise of the friends.

Will Ignatushka, like a real man, as his own father and godfather, play hockey? Time will tell.

"At least there will be someone to train him!" exclaims Sasha Ovechkin. "By that time I will finish with my career..."

Why Ilya chose to baptize his son in Latvia? It is in the previous post. Also there's no mentioning of Semin. Maybe it was just a mistake by Didzis Rudmanis?

Ovechkin is on vacation in Latvia

#Caps stars #Ovechkin and #Semin are currently on a vacation in Jūrmala, Latvia. Ovi has became the godfather of Ilya Nikulin's son. :)

Reporting live from Jūrmala, this is Emily.

For those who don't know, Ilya Nikulin is Ovie's team Russia roommate and they share the Canadian Lucky Loonie digged from the ice in Quebec, sawed in two.

Boy, I wish Ovie would never take that Unlucky Loonie, it brought a lot of bad luck to him and team Russia in Vancouver.

And here's why Ovie and Semin ended up in Latvia. Ilya Nikulin's wife is Latvian, but as far as I understood she is Russian ethnically. Ilya invited Ovie to his son's baptism and to take a vacation there.

This article is dated as August 28, but there's no year, I guess the interview was taken last year in Kazan, Russia.
Last week Ilya Nikulin, the Kazan Ak Bars hockey player tied the knot. The wedding took place in Moscow, and two days later Nikulin had to go out on the ice in Novogorsk in a friendly match against Moscow Dynamo.

How did you meet your wife?
On vacation in Turkey. Ekaterina is a citizen of Latvia, we just chatted for a long time on the phone. After the wedding, we decided not to change her citizenship. It is more convenient for her and for me. Latvia is in the European Union, there is no sense to apply for a Russian passport, because now she can enter any European country freely without a visa.

Have you told her at once that you are a hockey player?
No, but even if I'd say it, it is unlikely it could make any difference. Although in Latvia hockey is very popular now.

Were there a lot of guests from the bride's side in Moscow?
We did not invite too many people, we prefered a narrow circle of friends and relatives. As a result there were probably about fifty people.

Where did you propose to her?
It was in Greece, on the island of Crete. We vacationed there this summer, I rented a yacht and on the board of the boat I asked Ekaterina to marry me.

After the World Championships in Moscow there were talks that you'd try the NHL with Atlanta. Is your wedding somehow linked with your decision to stay in Russia?
No, at that time I had not made a proposal to Ekaterina. I just decided that this year I'd still play in Russia.

As far as I understand there weren't too many hockey players at your wedding? Nobody was released from Ak Bars?
Yes, there was only one hockey player Alexander Ovechkin. Only he had a free time.

What present did Ovechkin give you at the wedding?
Sasha gave to us two travel bags. At the wedding he was not bored, he was eager to participate in virtually all wedding games. Which ones? I don't even remember, have to watch the videotape.

You don't remember? I guess it was a good party...
(Laughs) At the wedding the groom is not supposed to drink much. And I couldn't drink because the next day I had to go out on the ice.

How much it cost you to "buy" the bride?
Well, we didn't get to the money. But I had to sing and do striptease. Of course, I did not undress myself, I had a team of assistants, they had to do it for me. As of the songs, we sung almost in chorus "Team of our youth" and "Yellow-belly doesn't play hockey". In general, it was really nice party. The wedding party began at five o'clock, went on late into the night, some guests left the restaurant about two o'clock at night. Everyone enjoyed it, the guests were leaving in complete ecstasy.

Do you plan a wedding at the church? Is your wife also a Christian?
Yes, we both are the believers, but don't belong to the pious ones. The church wedding, I think, is even more serious step than a regular wedding. At least for now we haven't thought about it.

Update: EVEN MORE TO FOLLOW :-)

For now here the picture from baptism:

Why incorrect choice was made for Hart trophy winner

Congrats to Henrik Sedin and it's not his fault, but it's not only Bruce Boudreau who didn't agree with the awards voting:

Bruce Boudreau on NHL Awards choices

Here's a complete analysis from Kukla's Korner why an incorrect choice was made for Hart trophy winner:

by PuckStopsHere, June 28, 2010, Kukla's Korner:The biggest difference between the three players is their goal totals. Sedin scored 29, while Crosby tied for the league lead with 51 and Ovechkin was one back with 50. Sedin had a far lower goal total and this difference is important enough that i would not have picked him as MVP.

Although, one can look at things another way and argue that Sedin played in the West Conference and his points were harder to come by because the West Conference is better than the East. Alexander Ovechkin played in the weakest division in hockey (the Southeast), but this was not a primary source of his points. Ovechkin scored 29 points against his division (while Sedin had 34 and Crosby led the league with 44 points against his division). Against the West Conference, Ovechkin scored 12 goals and 8 assists in 17 games, Crosby had nine goals and eight assists in 17 games and Sedin, while playing the East Conference, scored six goals and 18 assists in 18 games. This is a small sample size to draw conclusions from, but we can conclude that playing in the West Conference likely cost Sedin points. We also can conclude that even with Sedin’s somewhat enhanced point total, he would still be well behind Crosby and Ovechkin in goals.

Another factor to look at is that Ovechkin played fewer games than Crosby or Sedin. Ovechkin played 72 games, while Sedin played all 82 and Crosby played in 81 games. Thus Ovechkin’s per game totals were higher than either of the other two. Ovechkin missed four of these games due to suspension, so some of this missed time (but not all) is his fault.

In terms of ice time, Sedin played about two minutes per game less than either Ovechkin or Crosby (who were within ten seconds per game of one another). Comparing ice time, a large part of this ice time was power play time. Vancouver played two complete forward units on the power play, while both Pittsburgh and Washington tended to give their MVP candidate the bulk of the power play time with changing linemates. This left Sedin third in power play points among these three (Ovechkin 36, Crosby 34, Sedin 27). Likely that says that Sedin could have had more points had he played as much on the power play as the other two.

In terms of defence, none of the three were superstars. In the Selke voting, Crosby and Ovechkin got a few mentions but finished well back and nobody voted for Sedin. One of Ovechkin’s votes was a much criticized first place vote (how can he be the best defensive forward?). Realistically, there is little difference between any of them in their defensive value. Many people give Sidney Crosby credit for his value in faceoffs. He was 11th in faceoffs in the league with a 56.1% success rate. I don’t put a lot of value in this since all faceoff percentages are near 50% and there is certainly precedent for having a poor defensive season and a high faceoff percentage (see Rod Brind’Amour).

When we look at puck possession type metrics like adjusted +/- and Corsi Numbers, Ovechkin and Sedin are well ahead of Crosby this season, with Ovechkin in the lead. That is a point against Sidney Crosby.

All told, Alexander Ovechkin has the best points per game, though his game total is partly reduced by suspension it is more significantly reduced by injury. Henrik Sedin has the highest point total. Sedin is the player who is most likely to have his point total kept lower because of circumstances outside of his control. However, Sedin is also the lowest goal scorer of the bunch by a significant margin. Defensively, there is little edge between the bunch, although puck possession type numbers clearly place Crosby below the other two and give Ovechkin a slight edge. I think that Alexander Ovechkin is clearly the player who has the highest per game value to his team of the three. A controversy exists only because he missed some games. Nevertheless, his higher goal total than Sedin and his higher Corsi/adjusted +/- than Crosby show better puck possession and should have made him the Hart Trophy winner.

I also liked the discussion in comments section where PuckStopsHere explains MVP part, and I'd say it was brilliant:

you’re completely ignoring the hart definition - “the player adjudged most valuable to his team”

The most valuable player to his team is the player with the greatest overall value. What is more valuable? A $10 million diamond in a box of million dollar diamonds or a $5 mill diamond in a box of gravel and glass shards. The $10 mill diamond is obviously more valuable. Only hockey fans would turn around and argue that the $5 mill diamond is more valuable to his box, because he is the only stone worth anything in the box - even though he is less valuable than the $10 mill one.

Ovechkin: I slept a couple of hours on the plane

Japer's Rink, June 26, 2010:
Prior to the beginning of the 2009-2010 season, Alex Ovechkin spent a few days in Canada doing some promotional appearances.

One of those was a private event for Energizer Canada. Part of his commitment for this promotion was to return to Canada to host a clinic for a local kids' team.

The lucky team was chosen by lottery, and after many delays, Ovie was finally able to make good on his promise with a long journey from Las Vegas to Ajax, Ontario following the NHL Awards. He made a whole bunch of kids very happy.

Evgeny Kuznetsov interview to Sport-Express

"I am very glad that I was chosen by Washington, a club with a lot of Russians," said Kuznetsov. "Actually I think it is more important which club had chosen you rather than the number with which you were chosen."

Before the draft ceremony, have you dreamed about a certain club that could choose you?
No, I was hoping it would be a strong team and that there would be Russians. And Washington is an ideal option. By the way, some time after the draft I went to the table housed by representatives of the club and I was handed a phone. It turned out that Alexander Ovechkin was on the line, who told me the following: "Congratulations, welcome to Washington." At first, I couldn't believe my ears that I was talking to Ovechkin.

When are you planning to travel to Washington?
First I'll work out for a few days in New York and then I'll fly there in early July. This is when the rookie camp will start.

Have you already made a decision where you will play next season?
I have an existing contract with Tractor. On the one hand I am really looking forward to get to Washington and on the other I understand the reality that I am not ready yet.

It is now possible that Caps will have Russian troika. Have you ever thought that one day you could come out on the ice on the same line with Alexander Ovechkin, one of the best players and scorers in the NHL ?
I want to play with him and Sasha Semin as soon as possible. I saw Ovechkin only on TV, and I remember Semin when he was with Tractor.

And the winner is... Alex Ovechkin!

Maclean, wearing the shiniest tux I have seen on TV, opened the envelope and Lindsay announced Ovi as the winner.

This one used to be the Lester B. Pearson Award, but it's aptly named now in favor of Ted Lindsay. It goes to the player voted most outstanding in the NHL and it's voted on by the players. This award is a big deal to the players because their peers are the ones that vote for it.

Ovi said "it was a tough night last night." I think he would retire to Vegas if he could. He gave kudos to his late brother, which was really nice. But, just as he was supposed to leave the stage, well, he wouldn't do it.

They introduced Reese Waters, the host of the Daily Line on Versus, but Ovi wouldn't go away. He never does. He's everywhere and you can't get rid of him. He's persistent.

Update:

Totally agree with Mike Prada:
Think about what Ovechkin lingered around to talk about. Before he was cut off, all he said were the requisite platitudes that don't mean anything. But as soon as he stopped talking the first time, it was as if he realized
"Crap, I really should thank some of my teammates, since otherwise the vengeful, annoying media will get on me for something stupid again."
So he did, and wouldn't get off the stage until everyone who needed to be given a shoutout got one.

Ovi couldn't leave without saying 'thank you' to Ted Leonsis, GMGM, Bruce Boudreau and the team, he did the right thing!
