One weekend of people's superstar
A lot had happened last weekend and after while I was driving from the West Coast back home. Like anybody else I read Ovi's tweets and watched YouTube videos on my Android phone, but posting from the phone is not that easy or fun.
Now I am back and doing my job as a court stenographer, I'll start with Ovi's tweets...
- Apr 1, 2011 ovi8: With the First Lady! http://yfrog.com/h2yz4ndj
How did it happen? Dan Steinberg asked Ovi...
Me and [Jason] Arnott go to restaurant and she was there,” Ovechkin explained. “So I asked the manager can we take a picture with her. It was kind of cool, and she was very nice. Like, it’s unbelievable.”
and then his teammates...“That’s just part of the way he is,” Matt Bradley said. “He’s just a happy-go-lucky guy, and he treats everyone the same, and that’s what makes him the kind of person he is .”
But he didn't ask Jason Arnott, :) Sean Fitz-Gerald did...
“I went up to say, ‘Table for four,’ and this gentleman came over and grabbed me by the shoulder and said, ‘Step back,’” Arnott said. “He didn’t say, ‘Excuse me.’ Just, ‘Step back.’ I was like, ‘What?’ ”
Arnott, a 6-foot-5, 220-pound forward with the Washington Capitals, is rarely shoved in public. His wife was the first to notice the man’s earpiece, and since they were eating in Washington, the couple expected to see a senator sweeping in behind the bodyguards.
“Then she walked in with a bunch of her friends,” Arnott said, still in awe. “And my wife and I were like, ‘That’s Michelle Obama.’ ”
This quote is precious :)
“We talked a little bit about the Capitals,” Arnott said. “We were trying to get her to come to a game. And she said she and her husband were trying to get to a game. Ovie’s like, ‘We can get you tickets if you want to come.’”
And then Mike Knuble says:
“I think he enjoys it all, and he takes it all in, you know? He feeds off it. He’s a regular guy. He’s out there. People know where he lives, know his schedule and know where he parks. He’s kind of like the people’s superstar.”
- Apr 2, 2011 ovi8: How u like my dance??haha
Another GWG for Ovi, he leads the NHL in that category.
- Apr 3, 2011 ovi8: At lil wayne concert! Super!!!! Drake here too!so sick!!!!
Ovi with Drake and Lil' Wayne
ovi8: With all my boys! Nicklas Backstrom, Marcus Johansson, Mike Green, John Carlson, Ovi with Drake and Lil' Wayne
Whew, That was intense :)
Then there was another Ovi's day in the office in Toronto. Ovi scores his 300th goal, the fastest Russian to reach 300 goal mark behind Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, Brett Hull, Mike Bossy, Jari Kurri and Teemu Selanne.
Bradley, Erskine, Knuble, Neuvirth and Ovechkin speak following the win against Toronto
Congrats to Ovi and hopefully this is the year for Ovechkin and Caps.
The playoffs will start next week and one could wish Caps won't play against the team with "hot goalie". Who can it be, who can become a show stopper? Let's see... Henrik Lundqvist, Ryan Miller, Dwayne Roloson, actually a big chance. Oh, well... On a forth year of playoffs, being wiser and more experienced, you gotta solve it... That's the hope. :)

Thanks for the recap of the various pieces and the links TJ, and welcome back. It's been slow without you :-)
Loved how Ovi got his pic taken with the First lady, so cool. and the dance, only our captain.... :-)
I had been wondering how the FLOTUS pic came about. Hadn't seen those articles yet!
And I was hoping they invited her and her hubby to a game!
Welcome back TJ! And thanks for the awesome recap of what Ovie and the Caps have been up to.
LOL at his pic with Mrs. Obama and how it came about. IMO only Ovie could get away with something like that. He is the epitome of cool and confidence for sure.
And I really like Mike Knuble's insightful observation that Ovie is "The People's Superstar." Even with his rock star persona, Ovie is in many ways a regular guy who loves his family, is loyal to his friends, and is gracious with fans and appreciates their support. He is the anti-thesis of the bland, vanilla, cliche, cookie cutter hockey player. Ovie is one of a kind, special and unique. IMO that's why he appeals to fans of all ages and both genders.
Also, like TJ, I hope the Caps are wiser and more experienced now. And having gone through so much angst this season, will finally reap the rewards of this struggle with a Stanley Cup victory.
Whoops, I forgot to identify myself in the previous post. I'm Anonymous, sorry about that.
Come on everybody knows black people don't watch hockey..no chance the obama's go to a caps game
But the question is, who was the fourth person having dinner with them? :-)
@bwitch16: you asked the $64,000 question LOL.
LOL. Anonymous. I guess I'm the exception to your comment about black people and hockey. My husband and I say that all the time. As a matter of fact our families call us white because we do watch hockey and enjoy it.
@bwitch16: Please let us know when you get the scoop.
Hi OVI you made from me one BIG fan OF HOkey, but you need to know you play in american ligue and they don't want you to be the best [apr 99]don't forgat your BBis Canadien too,why you don't ask to play in seim lain with SEMIN and NICK ,THIS line will be bigar than Lemiu-Jagar ,Gtest99 and 11,but they bdon't want this hapened, ask this Idiot coach to make happy the people and hE will be the ever beast coach ,
@ last Anonymous,
Wow. Now that is bad stereotyping. Ovie is well-respected and liked by his peers in the NHL and by U.S. and Canadian fans. The outliers are not the majority opinion.
^^^ What O said about stereotyping Ovie. IMO he is one of those rare athletes with the ability to transcend his sport and appeal to a diverse fanbase, not only in hockey but sports in general.
