How unfit was Ovechkin last summer?

You decide...

August 2010 (from Ovechkin's DVD)

Obviously he is 6 years older...

I think this year he already lost weight, already in a better shape and hopefully won't look like that in August. It's all up to Ovi...

(The comparative pictures were taken from HF Boards thread)

2010 pre-season training after DVD was made. Too little, too late?

He lost a lot of weight right before the playoffs. I think it has something to do with Arnott from what he said around that time about Jason helping him, telling him what to do, ect.

I really hope he stays in shape. I think he probably will, but you never know. It took him longer than past years to get it off, so hopefully he'll take that as a hint. The speed will do him well in the new Caps format.

I'm hoping he will lose the weight. Last season he really didn't seem the same player from years prior. I think most of it is with the added weight he didn't have the sudden burst of speed that he had earlier.

This thread couldn't have come at a better time. There's a very interesting read on Japers' Rink from Thursday, a translation of a Nick Backstrom Swedish interview. Nick says he's already started his offseason training and has been for about two weeks. He works out Monday through Friday and plays tennis and other sports on the weekend. He also says he changed trainers this year because he wanted to do more work on his skating.

I find all this fascinating given Ovie's pledge to do things differently this year. He did look like he lost a lot of weight before the playoffs, and in the pics of him playing soccer with his Team Russia teammates at the WC. I really hope he keeps the weight off plus gets started training earlier and more thoroughly than last year. If Arnott played a role in helping him realize the importance of being in condition, and if Ovie is really serious about making changes, I think he will arrive at training camp this year in much better shape. At least I hope so.

I think he was ok during and after the DVD. I think he gained weight on September.
Anyways, I heard he work out on the hotel gym where he stayed for the wedding so he is probably working out daily (I hope so.)

I think the weight in the photos have a lot to do with Ovie's age, as TJ mentioned, but there is no denying that sometimes he is carrying too much weight for his frame and maximum effectiveness on the ice. I thought a couple years ago he found the right balance to enable him to be a wall but not sacrifice his explosiveness. Hopefully he'll fine that again. If he doesn't get control now, then he is going to be overweight for the rest of his life when he stops playing. Just because they have a sismlar build doesn't mean he's condemned to have his father's weight problem.

Also, bravo, Nicky! Now if only Ovie would realize that if you want to do things differently, then you have to get started sooner rather than later (and the way he spends his down time has an impact on everything).
