Well, some people are disappointed that he has not started training for real, but I'm glad to see that he is not hitting the nightclubs 24/7. He is hanging out with his family and friends and having some rest.
Rest is good...=)
I agree with Devi. He may not be "training", but he's not being drunk on a boat with a slew of women. He's going to, what look like nice- albeit maybe drunk- social events.
Meh. If lots of alcohol is being consumed, it's still same old same old Ovie. :(
Paging the tee shirt police.
Somewhere in June he found time to go on vacation to Turkey for five days with Semin and Varly, Orlov ran into them at the hotel. Ovi said it was a quiet vacation, just swimming and sleeping, maybe that's why we haven't seen any pics surface from it.
it's his summer, let him enjoy it. whatever
the caps didn't fail this year because Ovie was out of shape, or enjoyed his summer too much last summer. Ovie showed up during the playoffs, he lead the team in points during the regular season, we finished first in the east....ovie enjoying himself, drinking, partying for a month or two during his summer vacation is not the problem.
Let's all take a side trip into the not-too-distant past. Specifically, the monthly archives for On Frozen Blog, back to the July 2007 thread No Summer Vacation for Ovechkin. It's a translation of an interview with Ovie describing his grueling off-season training in St. Petersburg which was already under way. He wasn't satisfied with scoring "only" 46 goals for 2006-2007, and wanted to train longer and tougher for the upcoming 2007-2008 season.
What did Ovie do in 2007-2008? He set the single season scoring record for LWs with 65 goals. Granted, he was four years younger then, but he realized he had to adjust the length and toughness of his training regimen if he wanted to accomplish his goals. IMO now, four years later and older, he needs to re-visit that decision if he's serious about doing things differently this season.
@BobbyG,
We seem to be on the same wavelength. For several days I've been thinking about his previous commitment to training. In past years he was almost obsessive about it carving out time to work on whatever he thought needed to be improved, even his bread and butter: his acurate, hard shot.
His off seasons no longer reflect that dedication. It's as if his stardom (success) has gotten to him is some way. His words and actions aren't aligning. If you rest on your laurels, then you get passed. If he believes that his most productive years are behind him (as a growing minority are saying), then it becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy if he doesn't do everything he can to maintain and broaden his skills.
Also, if he does better when he sets high personal targets for himself, I think I recall him saying before last season that he wasn't going to focus on the personal, then he needs to set those goals again. The reality remains that the Caps rely on his high productivity. His personal stats are still immensely important to the team.
As I posted in a post that seems to have gone missing, other people, including a former hockey player, are surprised that he isn't going to start training until nearly August. According to others, now is the time most players start training.
Ah, I found my previous comment. I had written it for an earlier post.
again I say who cares. he sets personal bests, leads the league, wins trophies...whoop de doo. still no Cup still no getting past the second round. Ovie is fine, sure he can work out more during the summer, but him partying last summer was not the reason we didn't make it past the 2nd round....again. this is a team sport, a team game, and Ovie is the Captain of a team, i don't care if he only scores 30 goals again or gets 80 points, i want the cup and that is all that matters
The issue isn't Ovie winning awards or setting personal bests. I used the 2007 interview as an example of Ovie modifying his training because he wasn't happy with his offensive production from the previous season. He wanted a different result, and took steps to make it happen.
This past season, immediately after the Caps were eliminated from the playoffs, Ovie phoned GM McPhee and said he didn't like the feeling of losing, he knew he and the team were better than the playoff results showed. Ovie promised to do things differently with respect to his training this summer plus watch game film. I don't think it's unreasonable to expect Ovie to keep his word.
So now when he says he won't get started training until closer to August, when other players including teammate Nick Backstrom have already started training, that's when I start to become concerned about how serious Ovie is about making changes.
Ovie arrived at training camp last year out of shape and in poor condition. You could see how winded he was during practices, and even during games. IMO his poor conditioning left him more susceptible to injuries. We did find out late in the season that he played most of the season with injuries. IMO if he had taken better care of himself, he could have avoided a lot of problems.
The issue then is, why was Ovie so out of shape last season. I suspect it was directly related to his excessive partying, staying in Moscow (for reasons I have an opinion about but don't want to address here) instead of going with his regular trainer. I hope that Ovie makes better decisions this time, to get started training earlier and harder, if he really means it when he says he doesn't like the feeling of losing. That's why I'm also concerned when he now says his training plans have fallen through and won't get going until close to August.
In a nutshell, I want to see real tangible evidence that Ovie says what he means, and means what he says, when he talks about doing things differently. What matters most to me is his credibility and commitment to being the best player he can be. This isn't about Ovie's personal bests and awards, it's about his doing anything and everything possible to realizing his full potential and using his awesome God-given talents to maximum advantage.
