Ovechkin: I started training earlier
"I've already started training," said Alexander Ovechkin to Sovietsky Sport Dmitry Ponomarenko. "Getting ready for the season."
Isn't it too early?
This summer I've intentionally started earlier. Last year I started training on August 1st, this year on July 20.
Why?
Last season was so-so... It seemed that I also was training well, but ... It was evident that something went not right. So I learn from my mistakes and decided to do more. In order not to repeat the bad season, it is necessary to change something. So I began restructuring from the very first stage of training.

Well done, captain ;)
Ovie is still saying all the right things. And as impressed as I am with his current weight and appearance based on recent photos (NOT the one from the Mike Vogel interview), I admit I still have some lingering concerns. It is one thing to not be fat and to look lighter in weight. It is another thing entirely to be fit and in condition to play hockey and play hockey well.
I hope we get some evidence, some photos and/or videos to show how and where Ovie is training. I haven't read anything new since he said recently his training plans fell through. So I'm understandably curious as to what specifically he's doing since he says he started training early on July 20.
Of course, some new shirtless pics will back up his claims of starting training early, all for scientific research & analysis. :)
I think he looks good. Thinner, yes, but his muscles still seem toned. Shirtless pictures would be better as well.
Um, did you guys not see the recent picture of Ovie during an interview? A giant layer of fat around his stomach. Yeah he upper body looks slimmer but that's not a good thing!!!
You know, Im just not worried about how he looks. One thing I have noticed over the past couple of years is that he has weird physiology. You can *always* tell when he has just eaten, because his belly gets distended. Granted if we ate as much as he appears to, all of our bellies would look that way. Last season, you could look at him one day, pot belly. For example, the ESPN Commercial day. Man his interview with Burnside looked rough, and they were fed sushi on the plane ride up. The next day he is svelte. Or to stick with the commercial thing, he doesnt look fat in the commercial. That *was* all the same day.
Anyway, I *am* excited to hear he is training early. Next think to look out for... coming home a week early. Home being DC that is.
Sorry if I have rehashed... I had to weigh in (no pun intended) on the Ovi weight topic because I haven't weighed in around here in nearly a year.

Starting a month later than his other big-minute teammates. He'd better be in shape when the season starts this year.
the proof everyone wants will come during training camp. he owes no one anything and everyone can just be patient and wait till September, and I'm sure people will still complain about him anyways. so over it
He can start 2 months later and beat Cindy. Is it what he has done so far? HE has his own system that has proven the best, but the last year it didn't work because he lost his coach, the air was bad, etc. The main thing is that before the last season everything worked for him, and Crosby and others were probably wondering: wtf, I am starting a month earlier than Ovi and I still can't beat him.
I think part of the proof comes from him taking it upon himself to change his plan. He's not blaming anyone or anything for last year. It was a change in style and he's still putting it on himself to become better. That shows maturity, in my opinion.
Weight isn't as big of a deal as everyone is making it out to be, he was bigger last year, so regardless if he's the same weight he'll be able to handle it better. Hopefully he'll still be in better shape come training camp though.
nniiicccee!!! now we just need some pics!!!
I think Anon was talking about Backstrom (teammate) starting early not Crosby. But I know you can't help but get your shots in whenever you can. Crosby actually trains year round if he's not injured which is ideal for an athlete. I understand needing to rest and recharge but more than 3-4 weeks and you will start losing everything you've gained physically in the season. I'm glad Alex is starting "earlier" even if it is only 11 days.
As for his weight, while he only gained one pound from the season before he was more muscular the season before. Muscle weighs more than fat. He lost muscle by not training for over two months but he gained a lot of fat. That translated more in size rather than his weight. I'm glad someone brought up food because this is an issue some athletes don't think about. Clearing 3 plates of food is no big deal when you have a match the next day or even hours before. You will work most of it off. But in the off season, especially if you're not training, you need to modify the amount of food you take in. It's no secret Alex likes to eat but when he's not training he needs to cut it in half. Not to mention all the empty calories that come with his alcohol/soda consumption. His metabolism is falling as he gets older which means he'll have to train more and eat better as the years go by. If he's not willing to accept that and do them then people will continue to discuss these things.
I'm looking forward to training camp to really see how he's doing. Positive thinking :)
SO WHAT EVERYBODY!!!!!!!! Who cares! Let the guy enjoy his time off in PEACE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I usually love this blog, but enough with the "Cindy". There is nothing wrong with being a girl. Crosby doesn't have to be brought into every comparision with Ovi.
Weight does matter. It slows you down on the ice and makes you less agile. Ovi is at his best when he's fast and shifty.
