Ovechkin scores game winning goal vs Isles

Isles 2, Caps 3.

Ovechkin's overtime game winning goal (26th goal of this season)

John Buccigross ‏ @Buccigross

Since 2005–06 (his rookie year), Alex Ovechkin scored more OT goals (11)than any other NHL player. Dan Sedin is second with 10.

Caps players Alex Ovechkin, Brooks Laich, Troy Brouwer and Jay Beagle address the media after a 3-2 OT/win at Verizon Center.
2/28/2012 8:27 Mins

Ovi:
It’s a huge victory for us. I had a lucky goal. I got the screen and I think I tried probably three times today to get that shot through.

Capitals Overtime:
A unique angle of Troy Brouwer’s game tying goal in the 3rd period in tonight’s 3-2 OT/win against the Islanders.
The puck is in the picture, Brouwer is outside of the picture frame on the left with Ovi skating towards him to congratulate with the goal...

Ovechkin's stats:
1 goal, +2, total ice time 21:20, 20 shifts, average 01:04, PP 05:21, even 15:59, 4 shots on goal, 4 attempts blocked, 4 missed, 3 hits, 2 giveaways, 2 blocked shots

Total of 12 shots like in good old times!

Was Ovechkin eligible for trade?

Here's what Ovi said about it by himself:

Ovechkin talks about trade:

Ovechkin: My answer is that I could be traded. Easily.

Q.: What's that? Do you think there will be someone who can pay for you... even more?

Ovechkin: Ha ha, maybe there is someone. Who knows? Or do you think that there won't be? Well, I am not going there. I just have such a crafty contract where the club has a theoretical right to trade me to anyone for any money. But in the next three years it can only happen with my consent. Of course I won't give it. Well, after 3 years nobody will ask my permission, this clause will be gone. And then there will be nothing that I can do. Hockey is business. That means I can be dealt by Washington Capitals too.

Ovechkin talks to media after morning skate. 2/27/2012

Ovechkin talks about possible trades and confident that this team has as good chances if the trades won't even happen.

Awesome win over Leafs and Ovechkin definitely gave the team big momentum after returning from the injury. Let's hope it will continue after the second victory for Caps in 2 back-to-back games. Ovi finishes with 2 assists and 10 shots with 5 of them on goal.

Ovechkin stats after the 1st:

1 assist, +1, total ice time 05:59, 8 shifts, average 00:44, even 05:59, 1 shot on goal, 1 attempt blocked

Ovechkin scores on return from injury

Caps 4, Habs 1.

Alex Ovechkin sneaks down low, and blasts a one time pass through Price for a 3 goal lead.

I'm not sure if anybody did see it when PK Subban sort of backed off on Ovi's goal instead of blocking that shot,PK was on shooting lane!!!

Mike Keenan used to bench players for not blocking shots or for flamingo (blocking shot by staying on one leg)!

What a pack movement by Habs on that shorthanded goal, careless play by Ovi's led to this goal against.
That was Ovi's giveaway #2...

Ovechkin's stats after the 1st:
Total ice time 07:00, 7 shifts, average 01:00, PP 01:08, even 05:52, 2 attempts blocked, 2 hits

After 2nd:
1 goal, +1, total ice time 13:44, 18 shifts, average 00:45, PP 04:11, even 09:33, 3 shots on goal, 2 attempts blocked, 2 hits, 1 giveaway, 1 blocked shot

Final:
1 goal, +1, total ice time 17:43, 22 shifts, average 00:48, PP 05:54, even 11:49, 3 shots on goal, 2 attempts blocked, 2 hits, 2 giveaways, 1 blocked shot

Caps players Brooks Laich, Jason Chimera, Michal Neuvirth, Alex Ovechkin and Mathieu Perreault address the media after a 4-1 win at Verizon Center.

Alex Ovechkin is back

Ovechkin (via Capitals Insider):

“I just tried a couple of days ago skating and last night I don’t feel well. Today I feel normal.

It is frustrating, especially in this period of time in the season. I was in a situation [where] I can’t help my teammates, I can’t help the team to win. So it was kind of bad feelings. Right now I feel normal and ready to go.

Via Stephen Whyno:
Asked if he'd be playing even if the Caps led the Southeast Division by 10 points and not chasing a playoff spot, Ovechkin said, “Yeah.”

“Even if you have something big, you still want to be in and help the team,” Ovechkin said. “But if you can't help the team and you know you're not going to be like a hundred or 80 percent, it's not going to be worth it.”

More on Kuznetsov's contract negotiations

Sport-Express has learned that the latest round of contract negotiations between Tractor and their star player Yeugeny Kuznetsov has ended at impasse. The management of the club and player's representatives could not reach a compromise. According to unofficial information the last offer from Chelyabinsk was at $2.5 million for next season. However Kuznetsov's representatives continued to insist on a somewhat larger amount.

Kuznetsov's salary for this season is about a $1 million. Note that the player himself has not decided where to continue his career. The Washington Capitals, who own the rights to 19-year-old forward in the NHL, also expect to see Kuznetsov with them next season.

According to Sports.ru, Yevgeny Kuznetsov agents are in the talks with another KHL team Ufa "Salavat Yulaev". In Ufa, Kuznetsov is seen as a possible replacement to Alexander Radulov, who is most likely to leave to the NHL this summer.

Update 2/24/2012:

Tractor's General Manager Vladimir Krechin called Sport-Express yesterday. "Your post about the negotiations with Yevgeny Kuznetsov that ended at an impasse, caused a storm in the city. My phone couldn't stop ringing," told Krechin to SE reporter Yuri Golyshak. "In fact the negotiations are still going. We just decided to temporary pause the negotiations and return to the table after the season will be over, so that our star player will not be affected by that during playoffs.

How to count Ovechkins

wikiHow:

Having difficulties sleeping? One method that has been suggested over the ages is to count something. For some cultures, the famous symbol to count at night is that of the sheep. It's a visualization exercise that will create a gentle rhythm that may help you to fall asleep by banishing other thoughts and worries. And a good night's sleep is the best guarantee of good health, allowing you to wake up refreshed, ready to tackle any problems that might otherwise have kept you awake.

As probably a lot you know, the root of Ovechkin's(Овечкин) last name is Greek's Ovechka(Овечка) that was borrowed in Russian language from Latin, which means Lamb or Sheep in English, Oveja in Spanish or Ovino in Italian.

Now you can get that Russian tweet:
Александр Овечкин, чтобы уснуть, считает хоккеистов.

Alexander Ovechkin is counting hockey players in order to fall asleep.

:-)

Scotty Bowman: "The Art of Coaching the Team During the Game"

Here is more on Scotty Bowman's book, published by the KHL, called "The Art of Coaching the Team During the Game". It got our attention when we posted the translation of Pavel Lysenkov's interview with the Head Coach of team Russia:

Coach Bill is reading Scotty Bowman's book in Russian: "Искусство руководить командой во время матча"

Well, Pavel went on and published some excerpts from Bowman's book with the comments of the former team Russia coach Vladimir Krikunov. His team beat Canadian Olympic team in Turin when Ovi scored GWG and then, of course, they lost the next game to Finland. Unfortunately it was too much to translate, so only Bowman's part was translated. Kind of funny, Bowman was translated into Russian and then from Russian into English. Imagine that and how much was probably lost in translation. :-)

Here are Bowman's 10 commandments:

1. CHOOSING A GOALKEEPER
A lot of goalkeepers want to know whether they will be playing a day before the game starts. That's right, goalkeepers should have time to prepare. But there are those who, after they learn that they are not playing, allow themselves to relax, and it hurts the team. They're not ready to go out if change is needed. In my experience there was never a rigid rule to inform about the decision, for example, exactly 24 hours before the game. I'm talking about it when I see that it is the right time. The ideal time is before the morning skate.

2. COMMUNICATION WITH THE MEDIA
For the players the media is a source of a feedback. It is therefore important not to tell reporters anything from what they can make a story. From my experience if a reporter got something from you about someone, she can immediately go to that hockey player and ask to comment on it. All this can cause a controversy, that's why you need to be very careful to say something. It is suffice not to say something disrespectful.

3. HOW THE LINE COMBINATIONS ARE CREATED
Creating a line means to identify the two players who will play well together. It is important to let these two forwards to get to know each other, how the other forward will play in certain situation. Well, the third player may vary. Depending on how the game develops the line can be completed with a speedy player or with a power forward.

4. PLAYING TIME
There never been a team where every hockey player was happy with his role. When a player complains, the most common complaint would be "I could have played much better if I had more ice time." The coach won't be able to avoid such complaints. But we must make sure that the best players will have the most ice time.

5. SPECIAL TEAMS ON POWER PLAY
We need two types of the players that will be decisive on proving the effectiveness of the power play; the hockey player with a good slapshot from the blue line and a strong fearless player who is blocking the view for the goalie. For Detroit these positions are often occupied by Nicklas Lidstrom and Tomas Holmstrom. In general we searched for a balance between right handed and left handed players, the dispatcher and players who could score. Everyone must carry a large amount of work and the skill to operate along the boards.

6. COACHES & STAFF
It takes a well-coordinated work for the coaching staff during the games to succeed. Nowadays there are 3 coaches that are present on the bench in the NHL. In addition there is a coach who is engaged in video recording, there is a statistician and an extra coach who is watching the game from the stands.

7. PLAYING THE STAR PLAYER SHORT HANDED
When I was coaching Pittsburgh Mario Lemieux was always shadowed and covered by the other team. But when I would let him play short handed, it would change the mentality of an opponent. He couldn't carry the same offense, his job was to play defense to kill the penalty. Because of that Lemieux was not covered as much as 5 on 5, and that would give us an opportunity to counterattack.

8. THE LENGTH OF A SHIFT
If I would set the ideal length of the shift, then it would be about 40 seconds 5 on 5. Slightly longer on power play, slightly shorter when killing a penalty. Many teams tend to have 4 shifts during one penalty killing. And if you can change after 20 seconds, you should do it.

9. MATCHING
There are two rules: the best defensemen should play against the best opponent's forwards, and the best forwards should match against their weakest defensemen. This requires a lot of effort, and the entire coaching staff should work with the players together.

10. WHERE TO GET THE ENERGY
In the English language we often use the word "momentum" to describe the force that drives the team to victory. Also we often say that if the team demonstrates the speed and pressure, it brings success and luck. If you raise the level of energy the same way as the flywheel gains momentum, the team will be accelerated by itself. The energy can be found by doing short shifts, scoring an important goal, outhitting the opponent...

Source: http://www.sovsport.ru/gazeta/article-item/510677

Check #7. This is what I was preaching the whole year. Put Ovechkin in short handed situations. In addition to what Bowman is saying it will increase his ice time and will make him to play better defensively. However neither Boudreau nor Hunter have listened to it. :-)

So why this book can not be found anywhere in North America? I suspect it was Scotty Bowman's presentation given in Russia. He was involved a lot in consulting Russians when the KHL was created. Check principle #10:
In the English language we often use the word "momentum"...
That sounds like an American speaker giving a speech in non English speaking country...

It is interesting to see how Bowman's ten commandments fit into what Dale Hunter is doing. Here's how Bowman's rule #2 was "followed" after a tonight's loss to Senators. "Most of Hunter’s comments criticizing his No. 1 goaltender — or at least presumed No. 1 goaltender — came without any reporter mentioning Vokoun’s name," writes Stephen Whyno. "Vokoun was not requested to talk by media members, but his agent, Allan Walsh, pointed out that his client’s had a 1.92 goals-against average and .934 save percentage in his previous 13 starts."

“I’m not going to comment directly on what someone may have said after a game,” Walsh said in a text message. “I will point out though that hockey’s great coaches throughout history never resorted to publicly singling out a particular player, blaming him for a loss. Where I come from, you win as a team and lose as a team. The oldest, most tired excuse in the book is to blame the goalie.”

As Bowman said the reporters would go out and ask to comment. Not only they've asked to comment Vokoun's agent, they've asked Vokoun's fellow Czech Neuvirth. "I don’t think it was Vokey’s fault. That’s the way it goes sometimes," Neuvirth said. "Two tough goals, and they didn’t have a lot of shots."

Hunter confirms Ovechkin has lower body injury

Katie Carrera @kcarrera

Hunter said Ovechkin has a lower body injury.

@JapersRink: "Picture, thousand words, etc."

Capitals Insider:
Alex Ovechkin was on the ice for the start of the Capitals’ morning skate at Scotiabank Place in Kanata, Ontario, but only skated for roughly eight minutes before heading back into the dressing room here.

While he was on the ice, Ovechkin appeared to be testing something out. Just before he went back down the tunnel he tried to gather speed and explode through the neutral zone but after a few strides had to pull up. He skated over to the bench immediately and left the ice.

Ovechkin was seen limping after Monday’s 5-0 loss to Carolina and may have suffered an injury in that contest, during which he only played 15 minutes 43 seconds. Ovechkin absorbed a hip check by the Hurricanes’ Bryan Allen eight minutes into the second period of the game and it appeared to put strain on his left leg.

Left leg, huh? :( He was able to ride a stationary bike before going on the ice to skate. My guess is he has a Charley horse...

Wikipedia on Charley horse:
...a bruising of the quadriceps muscle of the anterior or lateral thigh, or contusion of the femur, that commonly results in a hematoma and sometimes several weeks of pain and disability.

Katie Carrera @kcarrera:
Ovechkin: "I don’t feel really good right now, we’ll see how it goes before the game."

Erin Nicks @erinnicks:
Ovechkin was whisked away after giving us that memorable quote. FWIW, he looks absolutely miserable. Dead behind the eyes.

Brent Wallace @tsn_wally:
Ovechkin out for tonight's game listed as day to day.

When it rains, it pours... :(

@directors_take:
So you make $9.0 this year & you can't afford a suit jacket without a hole?!

That's new Ovechkin clothing line, dude... The hole is there by design! :-)

Caps prospect Kuznetsov interview to Russian ProSport

Kuznetsov:

I was asked 8 times after the New Year, if I made a decision or not. The same question, but nobody will know it before I'll make that decision myself. As a matter of fact I have it, but It is not just final. It constantly changes when you think about it. If I will be offered a contract, I will consider it in any case. Last year there was also a lot of talk, but no one called. We talked with Washington this season, now there is a pause. Tractor has made an offer, but I'm still waiting.

Kuzya gives a photo session, some funny profanity laced jokes ("hang by the balls" was not bleeped :-) and interview in between...
Did Tractor offer a contract for 10 years?
No, just one year.

How strange...
If I was given a contract for 10 years, I would have stayed and never dwell on my decision.

But you would want that money up front, wouldn't you?
No. Just to be sure the execution of it was a 100% and I'd get all the money, in 10 years or in one year. That I was assured that I would receive it.

How one can be sure?
I want such contract that even if they want me to terminate it, the payment would not be two-thirds, but 100% of the outstanding amount.

Perhaps then a lifetime contract?
I would have thought. The advantage of it, you will know for sure that you will stay at one place, and plan your life accordingly, open a business.

Last year you said that in Russia one can not earn 11 million rubles to buy the Bentley Continental GT. Do you still think the same?
You can, if you play like Radulov. If you go to the stats on khl.ru, he is everywhere. Scoring leader -- Radulov, assists -- Radulov, sniper -- Radulov. Only the best goalkeeper is not him.

Silly Kuzya, how can one be sure in Russia about the contract and the money? Want to be sure? Come to America!

Embarrassing loss and it seems like Ovi got injured.

Capitals Insider:

It’s unclear when exactly Ovechkin might have suffered an injury. Based on video replay of the contest, it may have been when Ovechkin absorbed a hip check from Carolina defenseman Tim Gleason roughly eight minutes into the second period. The hit appeared to cause some strain on Ovechkin’s left leg upon impact.

CSN Washington’s broadcast of the game caught Ovechkin bent over on the bench, his head on the boards hidden in his hands, just eight seconds after his last shift concluded. (H/T to Japers’ Rink for the screen shot) Asked after the game what was going through his mind at that point, Ovechkin didn’t share much: “Nothing, I was just like very mad about myself.”

All told, Ovechkin finished with 15:43 in ice time – his second lowest total of the season

@JapersRink: "Picture, thousand words, etc."

Just showed how desperate Ovi was, trying to do something. In other times he'd never go like this along the boards because it was very clear he could get clipped by Gleason.

Ovechkin's stats:
-2, total ice time 15:43, 18 shifts, average 00:52, PP 03:08, even 12:35, 1 shot on goal, 3 attempts blocked, 1 missed, 3 hits

On a personal note I've lost my faith, if there was one, in Dale Hunter. The team looked totally unprepared, and that is coach's fault.

Ovi playing time was second in the team, John Carlson had more only by 7 seconds! Every time he was on the ice, he was a clear and present danger to Bolts. He played in almost every line. Unfortunately it didn't convert to a goal for Ovi.

Ovi scores the goal to tie the game

Really awesome goal considering it is not a vintage Ovechkin goal. I really wish Ovi could excel in those goals, it's a real whole new world of opportunities for him.

AP:

"You hope the the puck comes to you and you just shoot the puck and it goes in," Ovechkin said. "I was just lucky. In the situation we're in, we need luck."

Yep, you need luck, just like in playoffs, and it was a playoffs type game.

Ovechkin and Wideman got into fight

Tensions running high at  practice. Ovechkin and Wideman got into it a bit, exchanged some slashes, shoves and stared each other down.

"I will break you!" said Ovi with terrible Russian accent. :-)

Dale Hunter said he didn't mind Ovechkin and Wideman getting into shoving/slashing match at practice. More intensity is good, Hunts said.

GMGM on Ovi vs. Wideman at practice: "Actually that would have been a good one. That would have been the Rock star vs. the All-Star."

Hunts on Ovi vs. Wides: "Ovi must have gotten slashed ... on the hand. That’s the intensity that we need in practice and in games."

Katie Carrera, Capitals Insider:
Ovechkin and Wideman exchanged a few more words throughout the practice but after the on-ice session both players dismissed the incident.

“He said he didn’t like the stick he was using, so he wanted to break it. So he broke it,” Wideman said grinning. “And I say, ‘Are you happy?’ He says ‘Yeah.’ Then he said, ‘Do you want to go for dinner tonight?’ I was like alright, and that was that. We went back and continued the drill.”

Said Ovechkin: Wideman “said play against me hard, like in a game, so I just did. It’s something that he asked me to do, so I did it.”
